Why Workshops Work – by Window To A Writing Workshop

Howth Writing Workshops is starting year 6 and this year will bring so much new material, emerging writers, and strong literary performances.
Workshops serve to give new and experienced writers the time to develop themselves and their work.
And so much more!
I’ve been writing a lot about workshops this summer. Workshops are places of innovation, revelation, and production.
As a child of the 70’s I had never heard of a ‘safe space’. In my first workshop when I heard the term I asked the woman next to me was a ‘safe space’ a cousin to a ‘safe house’ where grannies and uncles hide their guns.🫣
By the end of that workshop I understood something profound. That when writers and writers-in-the-making gather together we become a writing community.
And that supporting, encouraging, and providing constructive feedback to develop craft, confidence, and exploring life story, we can become a literary movement.
Let me tell you my one fantastic finding from the last 18 years of being a workshopper and facilitator within the workshop community.
Literary friendships have huge cultural, developmental and historical importance. Stories are documented, explored, and shared.
I know I love my writing community. We start next week and we warmly welcome new voices and encourage your memoirs. The craic is great too!
I’m a total newbie here so guidance is a gift!
