Austin’s literary scene heats up with Torch Literary Arts events

AUSTIN, Texas — The vibrant literary community in Austin is buzzing with excitement as Torch Literary Arts gears up for a month full of engaging events. Executive Director Amanda Johnston and Communications Associate Brittany Heckard shared the details of what’s in store.

Torch Literary Arts is a local non-profit organization supporting and amplifying Black women writers. They have multiple programs including an online magazine.

Thursday the Torch Wildfire Reading Series is set to delight attendees with its upcoming event at independent book store, Book Woman. Author Kendra Allen will be at the event discussing her memoir, Fruit Punch.

“It’s a wonderful story– her personal story about growing up in Dallas in the 90s. A lot of relatable material, family dynamics, cultural institutions and how they impact us in our lives– large and small. It’s a wonderful read and it’s always a treat to hear from the author directly,” said Johnston.

In addition to the reading series, the Torch Writing Circle offers a space for writers to hone their craft and connect with fellow literary enthusiasts. It’s a perfect opportunity for those looking to dive deeper into their writing journey.

“People join internationally just to have an hour of free time to write in community, online, with tons of different people,” Heckard explained.

For aspiring writers, Torch Magazine is currently accepting submissions. Johnston and Heckard encourage submissions of diverse content, welcoming a range of voices and stories. Writers who get published in their magazine as a Friday feature get paid $150– notable since some publications don’t pay at all or make writers pay to be published.

“One thing we’re looking for is your unique story,” said Johnston. “No matter what the genre is– no matter what the subject is, know that it has a place at Torch. I would say, lean into surprise,” Johnson offered for first time submitters seeking advice.
